Resource: Community development and mental health - 01 July 2008
While community development is frequently referred to by the voluntary, public and private sector, an emphasis amongst funders on instant outcomes has made community development practice difficult to sustain. Which is why resources supporting community development practice are important. Community Development Foundation recently published a useful study of community development and mental health.
News: New edition of PQASSO quality mark launched - 26 June 2008
A quality mark is a recognised set of standards, policies and procedures that a project can put into practice, to help raise their efficiency. For a funder, the quality mark is a sign of particular competence.  A quality mark frequently used by voluntary and community projects is Practical Quality Assurance System for Small Organisations (PQASSO). This week the Charities Evaluation Service launched a 3rd Edition of PQASSO building on the success of the previous editions.
Voice: Community Allowance vital for participation in poor neighbourhoods - 26 June 2008
Processes ensuring equality of opportunity are vital in recruiting volunteers. Yet those claiming Incapacity Benefit and Job Seekers Allowance may have their benefit affected if they volunteer. This barrier to volunteering is becoming a major problem for projects working in poor communities. The Create consortium have proposed a Community Allowance to pay people to do work that strengthens their neighbourhood without it affecting their benefits.
funding: vcashpoint - 26 June 2008
vcashpoint, an initiative of the youth volunteering charity v, is offering grants of up to £2,500 to 16-25 year olds in England who want to set up their own volunteering project in the community. The next deadline for applications is 18 July 2008.
funding: sportsmatch - 26 June 2008
Sportsmatch, funded by Sport England, offers pound for pound matched funding to sporting stakeholders for projects that encourage sports participation at grass roots level. The maximum level of funding available is £50,000 for revenue projects.
