The Glebe Centre in Walsall is a resource centre and day centre for the disadvantaged in society. Homeless, ex-offenders, alcoholics, drug users, old people, working girls, all are welcome. We offer cheap breakfasts and lunch 6 days a week, with evening meal and evening opening twice a week. An alcohol project is also run by us offering group and one to one work.
The Glebe Centre can be contacted on 01922 625687 from 9.30 to 4.30 and email is theglebecentre@yahoo.co.uk
The Glebe Centre is run by Comex (Walsall) Ltd, a local charity based in Walsall, West Midlands. We have the only free showers in the borough and have free second hand clothing for the asking. Hot and cold drinks or snacks are cheap and meals are heavily subsidised. Breakfast is just 30p for something on toast and a hot drink, lunch is 75p for a cooked dinner, bread& butter, a cold drink and a pudding. Darts and pool table are available to be used, with regular tournaments.
We are the only organisation in the area that caters for the over-25 homeless. Many of our clients are in poor housing or on the streets and often we provide their only hot meal thats not fast food in a day. Numbers using the centre vary from about 25 to 65 a day.
We have an open door policy and have a good relationship with the local police. Occasional trouble within the building with someone kicking off or refusing to leave when asked - in which case the police are contacted. Challenges we have faced include the fun of sorting out lottery outcomes after they have awarded money (took us best part of a year before project could go ahead) and funding problems in the past.
Successes include arranging for people to be housed, people being helped to control their alcohol intake, the hungry fed and washing facilities provided.
We work closely with Beswick House, a nearby hostel for vulnerable adults that use the Glebe Centre for day provision for their residents.
